Voice of Democracy
Since 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program empowers high school students to articulate their thoughts on democratic and patriotic themes through recorded essays. Annually, around 25,000 9th-12th graders compete for a share of over $1 million in scholarships and incentives. The national first-place winner secures a $35,000 scholarship, with additional national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $21,000. State-level winners earn at least $1,000. Be sure to review rules and eligibility before submitting your essay by midnight, Oct. 31. The 2023-2024 theme is: "What Are the Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?" Patriot's Pen
Annually, almost 68,800 6th-8th graders participate in the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest, vying for a piece of nearly $1 million in state and national awards. The national first-place winner receives $5,000. This contest encourages young minds to reflect on America's history and their own experiences, drafting a 300- to 400-word essay based on a patriotic theme. Review rules and eligibility before submitting your essay by midnight, Oct. 31. The 2023-2024 theme is: "How Are You Inspired by America?" Dive into the future as we seek to inspire the next generation of leaders through these impactful scholarships.
