The United States Institute For Peace (USIP) Peace Scholar Fellowship Program grants non-residential fellowships to students enrolled in U.S. universities writing doctoral dissertations on topics broadly related to conflict management, peacebuilding, and relevant security studies.
Since 1988, the program has supported the dissertations of 371 young scholars, many of whom have achieved distinguished careers in research, higher education, and policymaking.

Details:
The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is an American federal institution dedicated to promoting conflict resolution and prevention worldwide. It provides research, analysis, and training in diplomacy, mediation, and other peace-building measures.
Established in 1984, the USIP was formed following years of proposals for a national “peace academy,” with Congressional legislation signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.
Applications from members of traditionally under-represented groups in international relations, peace and conflict studies, security studies, diplomacy, and international policymaking are strongly encouraged.
Requirements:
To be considered for the fellowship, you must:
- Be a Ph.D. candidate
- Have high-quality, policy-relevant research on conflict management, peacebuilding, and relevant security studies
- Priority given to applications closely related to the mission of USIP and/or research priorities of the Minerva Research Initiative
Duration and Reward:
The USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship funds up to 18 Peace Scholars for a 10-month non-residential fellowship.
Peace Scholars receive stipends of up to $20,000 for the academic year, paid directly in three tranches. Awards may not be deferred.

Method of Application:
Peace Scholars must participate in an annual workshop. Upon completing and committee approval of the dissertation, scholars submit a copy to USIP at PeaceScholarFellows@usip.org.
